FPL fans take note: Steve Bruce confirms Callum Wilson injury blow following Newcastle’s draw with Southampton
Newcastle held by Southampton
Newcastle would play host to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
The Magpies headed into the clash still in search of their first win of the campaign.
They began the season by blowing a 2-1 lead to lose 4-2 to West Ham, were then beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa, and then fell to Burnley on penalties in the League Cup earlier this week.
Versus Southampton, Newcastle came within inches of securing a huge three points on Saturday.
Steve Bruce’s side would take the lead in the tie on a pair of occasions, first through Callum Wilson after 55 minutes, and then in second-half injury-time via Allan Saint-Maximin.
However, Southampton managed to find a reply on both occasions, as James Ward-Prowse’s 96th-minute penalty earned the Saints a point on the day.
Callum Wilson injury
As well as surrendering the advantage twice, Newcastle were also dealt a blow on the personnel front on Saturday.
Callum Wilson was the club’s top scorer last term, and has already netted two goals in three Premier League appearances this time around.
However, the hitman was hauled off after 69 minutes versus Southampton and, speaking after the game, Steve Bruce confirmed that Wilson’s withdrawal was due to a thigh injury:
“Yes, he’s got a thigh injury. It’s a frustration, because unfortunately they are niggling him away. But, we will see how he is in the week and go from there.”
