After Billy Gilmour incident, Liverpool again forced to condemn fans over offensive chants vs Chelsea

Liverpool have released an official statement, condemning the actions of the club’s supporters during their meeting with Chelsea.

Salah cancels out Havertz

The marquee fixture of the Premier League weekend of course played out at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Liverpool welcomed Chelsea to Merseyside, for a meeting between two of the early favourites for the Premier League title.

A tightly contested affair was widely predicted ahead of kick-off, with both the Reds and Blues having enjoyed flawless starts to the 2021/22 campaign.

In turn, when all was said and done a little less than 24 hours ago, it came as little surprise to see the spoils shared.

It was Chelsea who opened the game’s scoring midway through the first-half, when Kai Havertz’s wonderful piece of improvisation saw the German nod beyond the flailing Alisson from Reece James’ whipped corner:

James, however, soon went from hero to villain, sent for an early bath after being adjudged to have purposely kept out a Diogo Jota effort with the use of his arm.

Mohamed Salah, in turn, stepped up to slot away the ensuing spot-kick, securing a share of the spoils for Liverpool in the process.

‘Condemns these actions’

As outlined above, however, an otherwise stellar day of entertainment on Merseyside on Saturday was soured by a round of altogether distasteful chants on the part of the home crowd.

Weeks after being heavily criticised for repeatedly belting out ‘Chelsea rent boy’ in the direction of Blues loanee Billy Gilmour, a similar chant was heard ringing around Anfield yesterday evening.

Liverpool have already been stout in their stance that such behaviour is viewed as completely unacceptable on the part of the club, a stance which has since been reiterated this weekend.

In a post across the Reds’ social media platforms, a statement was released, confirming that an investigation is set to be opened into the situation over the days ahead:

‘Liverpool FC is disappointed by reports that a small section of our supporters were heard singing offensive songs during Saturday’s fixture with Chelsea at Anfield.’

‘The club strongly condemns these actions and will be investigating all reported allegations of abusive and/or discriminatory behaviour with the relevant authorities to identify perpetrators. LFC is committed to tackling abusive and discriminatory behaviour, which has no place in football or society.’

‘As part of its Red Together campaign, which encompasses all the club’s work on equality, diversity and inclusion, LFC strives to be the forefront of the fight against all forms of discrimination both online and in-stadium to create an inclusive environment for all.’

‘The club would like to remind its fans of its code of conduct, which clearly outlines what it expects from all supporters visiting Anfield.’
