Brazil vs Venezuela: Preview
Brazil begin their Copa America campaign when they take on Venezuela at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia on Sunday.
The tournament switched to Brazil following disruption in Colombia and the surge of coronavirus cases in Argentina.
Tite’s Brazil, who are looking to secure back-to-back titles having won the competition in 2019, defeated Paraguay 2-0 in their latest World Cup qualifier in mid-week, which made it seven games unbeaten.
Liverpool’s Alisson Becker will start in goal, with both Marquinhos and Eder Militao forming part of the backline. Paris Saint Germain’s Neymar will lead the line, partnering Roberto Firmino in attack, and Richarlison and Gabriel Jesus will also provide attacking threat in the final third.
Venezuela, managed by Jose Peseiro, have secured only one victory from their last six matches, that coming in a 2-1 win over Chile back in November last year.
La Vinotinto sit 9th in the World Cup qualifying standings, 14 points behind their opponents Brazil and were defeated 3-1 by Bolivia in their latest qualifier on June 3.
Captain Tomas Rincon will start in his regular midfield role, and is likely to be joined by Manchester City’s Yangel Herrera, who spent last campaign on-loan at Spanish side Granada.
Both last faced each other in November 2020, with Brazil winning 1-0.
Prediction: Brazil 3 – 0 Venezuela
It should be a routine win for Brazil given they have won seven games in a row, with Venezuela victorious in just one from seven. With home advantage, the Selecao are likely to want to put on a show in front of their fans.
